Gonzalo Villar details fall from grace & decision to leave Roma

Following an unsuccessful loan spell at Getafe, Spanish midfielder Gonzalo Villar made his return to Serie A and was recently signed by Sampdoria who had already expressed interest in the player in January.

The 24-year-old spoke to Il Secolo XIX about his fall from grace at Roma and his decision to leave the Italian capital in search of more playing time.

“At Roma I learned what it feels like to go back from 100 to 0 and lose all the confidence in the world,” he said.

“I went from being among the regular starters and having a good EURO U21 competition to not playing for 22 consecutive games.”

“I found it a bit strange… I understand that in football you may like to play one way over the other. At least that’s how I explained it to myself.”

“I always gave my all, even when I wasn’t playing. I always respected my teammates. I never complained and I waited for the opportunity to come along.”

“The decision to join Getafe in January was very rushed and ultimately wrong. It wasn’t a team suited for my profile. But I knew I had to leave Roma.”
